Commenting on today's plenary vote on organ donation and transplantion, Hiltrud Breyer, Green MEP from Germany, said:

"It is long overdue that the European Union takes strong steps against organ trafficking. Any organ trafficking has to be stamped out - especially to end the exploitation of the poorest or people in emergencies.

We are now looking forward to a legislative proposal from the Commission that not only sets quality and safety requirements for organ donations, but also ensures that organ trafficking is seen as a crime and prosecuted as such."
